Best Paper for Leather Journals: GSM, Ink Bleed, Fountain Pens and Layouts

On this page

The best paper for a leather journal is a smooth, well-sized sheet of about 100 gsm or heavier that fits your journal's binding exactly. GSM tells you the paper's weight and bulk, but sizing and surface finish decide whether fountain pen ink feathers, shows through or bleeds to the next page.

Below we explain what GSM really measures, how to compare journals by paper weight, how to test paper with fountain pens and markers, and how to choose between dot grid, lined, grid, blank and kraft refills. New to the binding types? Start with leather journals explained.

Key takeaways

5 key findings
  • GSM is weight, not performance: it is grams per square meter. Ordinary copy paper is about 80 gsm; most journal paper sits around 100 to 120 gsm.
  • Sizing controls ink spread: paper sized to resist moisture keeps wet ink on the surface. Two papers at the same GSM can behave very differently.
  • Test your own pen and ink: nib width and ink wetness matter as much as the paper. Use the last page as a test sheet.
  • Pick the layout for the job: lined for long writing, grid for diagrams, dot grid for bullet journals, blank or kraft for sketching.
  • Fit comes before feel: refill paper must match the sheet size and hole positions, or the insert size, of your exact journal.

What does GSM mean for journal paper?

GSM stands for grams per square meter, written g/m². It is the mass of one square meter of a single sheet. The ISO A series makes this easy to picture: an A0 sheet has an area of one square meter, so a sheet of 80 g/m² A0 paper weighs 80 grams, and every smaller A size is half the area of the one before it.

Heavier paper is usually thicker and more opaque, so it hides writing on the reverse better. But GSM does not measure smoothness, coating, opacity or how the fibers absorb water. Those depend on the pulp and how the paper was finished. That is why a 100 gsm paper can outperform a cheaper 120 gsm paper with a fountain pen.

Typical weight How it feels Common use in journals
Around 80 gsm Standard copy-paper weight; noticeable show-through Budget notebooks, printer paper
90 to 100 gsm Firmer sheet; less show-through with most pens Everyday journals, planners, ring-binder refills
110 to 120 gsm Heavier and bulkier; fewer pages per inch Kraft journals, sketch-friendly bound journals
150 gsm and up Card-like; can stiffen a journal's spine Sketchbooks, watercolor and mixed media

Heavier is not automatically better. A 120 gsm block takes up more space than the same number of 100 gsm sheets, so a ring binder or traveler's notebook will hold fewer of them comfortably.

How to compare leather sketchbooks and journals by paper weight

When a listing states GSM, compare it along with the paper color, layout and sheet count, because they work together. Here is what BygoneMark's own product pages state, so you can compare like for like.

If a paper weight is not listed, do not assume it. Ask the seller, or test a sheet with the pen you plan to use.

Why does ink feather, bleed through or show through?

These three problems have different causes, so it helps to name them correctly:

  • Feathering: ink spreads sideways along the paper fibers, giving lines a fuzzy edge.
  • Bleed-through: ink soaks through the sheet and marks the back of the page.
  • Show-through (ghosting): writing is visible from the other side, but no ink has passed through.

Sizing is the main control. According to the American Institute for Conservation's paper conservation guidance, internal sizing is added to the pulp mainly to reduce wettability, and alum-rosin size was first adopted to prevent ink feathering on writing papers. A well-sized sheet holds ink at the surface long enough to dry. A poorly sized or very absorbent sheet pulls it in and spreads it.

Show-through is mostly about opacity, which rises with weight and with fillers in the paper. Bleed-through depends on how much liquid you put down: a broad, wet fountain pen nib or an alcohol marker can bleed through papers that handle a gel pen well.

Is 100 gsm paper good for fountain pens?

Often yes, but GSM alone cannot promise it. A fine or extra-fine nib with a moderately wet ink often behaves well on a well-sized 100 gsm paper. A broad or stub nib with a very saturated or shimmer ink may feather or bleed on the same sheet. Kraft paper, which has a rougher, more absorbent surface, can be less forgiving with wet inks than smooth white or cream paper.

A quick test takes two minutes. On the last page of the journal:

  1. Write a few lines with each pen you plan to use, including one heavy, slow stroke.
  2. Add a small filled square to see how saturated ink behaves.
  3. Time how long the ink takes to dry before it smudges under a fingertip.
  4. Turn the page and check for show-through and bleed-through.

Dot grid vs lined vs grid paper: which is best for journaling?

Pick the layout for the job you do most. Many ring-binder owners mix layouts in one cover, for example lined pages for notes and dot grid pages for a monthly tracker.

Layout Best for Trade-off
Lined (ruled) Daily journaling, long-form writing, meeting notes Awkward for diagrams and tables
Dot grid Bullet journals, habit trackers, mixed layouts You build the structure yourself
Grid Tables, technical sketches, planning, handwriting practice Lines stay visible behind writing
Blank white Sketching, mind maps, lettering No guide for straight lines
Blank kraft Collage, memory keeping, warm-toned sketches Lower contrast for dark pencil and some inks

Line spacing matters too. The Legacy A5 Ring-Binder Journal's page lists 8 mm spacing for its lined paper and 5 mm for grid and dot grid. Smaller handwriting suits tighter spacing, while larger handwriting usually needs wider lines to feel comfortable.

White, cream or kraft: does paper color matter?

For everyday use, color is mostly about contrast and comfort. White gives the strongest contrast for blue and black ink. Cream is slightly softer on the eyes and flatters brown and sepia inks. Kraft gives a warm, vintage look that suits pencil, white gel pens and collage, but reduces contrast for dark inks.

If you are keeping a journal for decades, paper chemistry matters more than color. The Library of Congress explains that acids break down paper over time and that lignin left in mechanically pulped paper speeds that process, while alkaline buffered papers resist it. The U.S. National Archives' holdings guidance notes that kraft and colored papers are often acidic and unstable. Unless a product page states that its paper is acid-free or archival, assume it is not.

Which pens are best for a journal you want to keep?

The National Archives also warns that most felt-tip and ballpoint pens use water-soluble inks that can run when wet and fade over time. For records meant to last, look for an ink labeled waterproof and fade-resistant, such as a pigment ink, and store the journal somewhere cool and dry. The Library of Congress notes that good paper stored at cooler temperatures and 30 to 40 percent relative humidity can last a long time.

How do you choose refill paper that fits?

Refill fit is the most common paper mistake. "A5" names a nominal paper size, but each journal system has its own exact measurements:

Journey Wrap A5 Leather Traveler’s Notebook.
System What to match Common mistake
Six-ring binder Sheet height and width, hole count and hole positions Buying "A5 six-ring" sheets with different spacing
Folio with notebook Notebook height, width and cover thickness Choosing a notebook with a cover too stiff for the sleeves
Traveler's notebook Insert height, width and spine thickness Assuming an "A5" insert is 148 mm wide
Bound journal Not refillable Buying a cover when the pages are fixed

Exact sizes really do vary. The Legacy Loop A5 binder's sheets measure about 210 × 142 mm, and the Legacy Plaque A5 traveler's notebook takes 210 × 140 mm inserts, both narrower than an ISO A5 sheet at 148 × 210 mm. Our A5 vs A6 size chart lists the common sizes in millimeters and inches.

Also check sheets versus pages. One sheet has two sides, so "88 sheets" can be listed as "176 pages." And leave room in a ring binder: rings that are packed full make pages hard to turn and can pull at the holes.

FAQ

What GSM is best for a journal?

Around 100 to 120 gsm suits most journaling with gel pens, ballpoints and fine fountain pens. Go heavier for markers or light washes, and remember that sizing and surface finish matter as much as weight.

Is higher GSM paper always better?

No. Higher GSM adds thickness and opacity, but it also adds bulk, so fewer sheets fit in a ring binder or insert. A well-sized lighter paper can resist feathering better than a poorly sized heavy one.

What paper does not bleed through with fountain pens?

Smooth, well-sized paper of about 90 gsm or more gives fountain pens the best chance, but no paper is bleed-proof with every nib and ink. Test your combination on a back page before writing important entries.

What is the difference between feathering and bleed-through?

Feathering is ink spreading sideways along the fibers so lines look fuzzy. Bleed-through is ink soaking all the way through the sheet and marking the back.

Is dot grid or lined better for journaling?

Lined is better for long written entries, and dot grid is better if you mix writing with trackers, lists or small drawings. If you are unsure, a ring binder lets you use both.

Can I put any A5 refill paper in an A5 leather journal?

No. Ring binders need matching sheet size and hole positions, and traveler's notebooks need matching insert dimensions. Measure a sheet or insert from your journal before buying.

Is kraft paper good for journaling?

Kraft paper is good for sketching, collage and a warm look, especially with pencil or light-colored gel pens. It gives less contrast for dark inks, and archive guidance notes kraft papers are often acidic, so it is not the first choice for long-term records.
