10 Best Refillable Journals for Travel: Covers, Inserts and Closures Compared

On this page

The cover is the easy part. Six months into a trip habit, what matters is whether you can still buy paper that fits.

The best refillable journal for travel is the one whose refills match how you write and whose closed size fits the bag you actually carry. Want separate books for plans, notes and sketches? Pick a multi-insert traveler's notebook. Prefer one running diary? A writing folio is simpler. Like moving pages around? Get rings. Choose the leather and color last.

How this guide works: eight of the ten journals here are made and sold by BygoneMark, and each uses a different refill system or size, so you're comparing systems rather than one product in eight colors. Wanderings and Still Archive are included as outside benchmarks for price and capacity. Nobody paid to be listed. Prices and specifications were read from each seller's page on 19 October 2026.

Key takeaways

6 key findings
  • Pick the refill system first. Separate inserts, one bound notebook or single ring sheets. That choice matters more than the cover.
  • Best all-round: Journey Wrap A5 ($69.00), three removable notebooks and a card holder under a wrap strap.
  • Most compact: Legacy Plaque Passport-Size ($29.00), three 64-page notebooks in a 135 × 105 mm cover.
  • Simplest: A6 Leather Writing Folio (from $49.00). One bound notebook, swapped whole when it's full.
  • Pages that move: Legacy Loop A6 rings ($59.00) for small, the A5 six-ring strap journal ($133.20) for full size.
  • A5 isn't a guarantee. Paper names describe paper; covers, insert widths and hole spacing still vary by maker.

Which refill system fits how you write?

A regular journal is one finished book. A refillable one keeps the cover and swaps something inside: a booklet, a whole notebook or single sheets. Which of those you swap is the real decision. Our guide to refillable vs bound leather journals goes deeper on the trade-off.

System What you replace Good for Catch Picks
Traveler's notebook inserts One booklet at a time Separate trip logs, plans, sketches Insert sizes can be brand-specific 1, 2, 3, 6, 9
Writing folio The whole bound notebook One running diary Can't rearrange pages 4
Ring binder Single punched sheets Planning, lists, reordering Hole spacing has to match 5, 7
Tied loose-leaf A set of inserts Vintage-style writing, kraft paper Refills less standard 8

A paper size name doesn't guarantee a fit

An A5 sheet is 148 × 210 mm, which is exactly what our A5 Writing Folio is built to hold. But a finished notebook adds spine thickness, ring binders add hole count and spacing, and traveler's notebook systems use their own insert widths: the Regular-Size format takes 210 × 110 mm inserts, which isn't an ISO size at all. Measure the insert you already have, or use each product's listed insert size. If the terms are new, start with leather journals explained.

Elastic, strap or open folio: which closure travels best?

None wins outright. It comes down to how often you open the journal and how much loose paper lives inside it.

Closure Good at Catch Picks
Wrap strap on a metal stud Quick, secure, adjusts as inserts pile up Slower to open than an elastic 1, 2
Elastic wrap Light and fast Squeezes harder as it fills 3, 6, 9
Wrap cord and leather tab Holds a ring binder shut Adds a few seconds every time 5
Leather strap and loop Secure with loose notes inside Bulk at full capacity 7, 8
Open folio Nothing to undo Holds nothing in 4

Traveler's notebooks: separate inserts (1 to 3)

Three notebooks under one cover, each with its own job. When one fills up you pull it out, date it and slide in a fresh one. The cover keeps going.

1. Journey Wrap A5 Leather Traveler's Notebook

BygoneMark · Best overall for travel

Plans in the lined book, sketches in the blank one, budgets and lists on the grid. The kraft card holder catches tickets, receipts and the museum map you swear you'll keep. It's the one we'd hand to most people starting a travel journal.

A5 height means full-size writing, and it also means it's the heaviest of the traveler's formats here. If it has to go in a jacket pocket, look at #3 instead.

Detail What the product page states
Cover Full-grain crazy horse leather, hand-stitched
Inserts 3 removable notebooks (blank, lined, grid), 32 sheets each, 96 sheets total
Paper 100 gsm
Extras Kraft card holder insert
Closed size 8.66 × 6.10 × 0.98 in (220 × 155 × 25 mm)
Closure Leather wrap strap on a metal stud
Personalization Available; prepared in 1 to 3 days
Price $69.00 USD, checked 19 October 2026

Skip it if: you want to rearrange single pages; this swaps whole notebooks.

2. Journey Wrap Regular-Size Leather Traveler's Notebook

BygoneMark · Best tall, narrow format

Same height as the A5, 30 mm narrower. That narrow page is the classic traveler's notebook shape: it reads like a column, fits a long list or an itinerary well, and slips into more bag pockets than A5 does.

It loads three 210 × 110 mm inserts on an elastic cord system. At 10 mm thick with all three in, it's slim for the page area you get.

Detail What the product page states
Cover Full-grain crazy horse leather, hand-stitched
Cover size 8.66 × 4.92 × 0.39 in (220 × 125 × 10 mm) loaded
Insert size 8.27 × 4.33 in (210 × 110 mm)
Inserts 3 notebooks (blank, lined, grid), 32 sheets each, 100 gsm
Closure Leather strap on a metal stud
Price $49.00 USD, checked 19 October 2026

Skip it if: you sketch wide spreads; the narrow page gets in the way.

3. Legacy Plaque Passport-Size Leather Traveler's Notebook

BygoneMark · Best pocket-size pick

Three notebooks in a cover not much bigger than a passport. Each insert has 64 pages, so you get 192 pages in total, which is more than the page size suggests. A metal quote plaque and hanging cord sit on the front.

Small pages are the trade-off. Quick notes and ticket stubs, yes. Long evening entries, they start to feel cramped.

Detail What the product page states
Cover Top-grain crazy horse leather, finished by hand
Inserts 3 removable 64-page notebooks (blank, lined, grid); 192 pages total
Insert size 4.92 × 3.54 in (125 × 90 mm)
Cover size 5.31 × 4.13 × 0.39 in (135 × 105 × 10 mm)
Extras Card holder; metal quote plaque; one assorted charm
Closure Elastic wrap
Colors Black, Teal Blue, Cognac, Espresso, Forest Green, Crimson, Purple
Price $29.00 USD, checked 19 October 2026

Skip it if: you'd rather have a plain front; the plaque is part of the design.

Legacy Plaque Passport-Size: three notebooks and a card holder inside.

Verdict: Most travelers: the A5. Long lists and a slimmer bag: the Regular-Size. Pocket only: the Passport-Size. All three swap whole booklets, so date each one before you file it.

Writing folios and ring binders (4 to 5)

If juggling three inserts sounds like admin, a folio holds one notebook and nothing else. If you live by lists that keep changing order, rings let you move single pages.

4. A6 Leather Writing Folio

BygoneMark · Best one-notebook system

One bound A6 notebook slides into the sleeves. When it's full you pull it out and slide in another; the leather stays. There's a pen loop and pockets for small paper bits, and that's the whole system.

You can buy it with an 88-sheet notebook (lined, blank or grid) or folio only if you already have a 105 × 148 mm notebook. There's no closure, so keep it in a bag pocket rather than loose.

5. Legacy Loop A6 Leather Ring-Binder Journal

BygoneMark · Best small ring binder

Six opening metal rings in a compact cover. Move today's list to the front, take out a finished page, add a fresh pack. A wrap cord and leather tab keep it closed, and a card-pocket insert and zipped pouch come with it.

Note the honest sizing on the page: A6 is the model name, and the included sheets are about 171 × 95 mm. Buy refills by matching the actual sheet and hole positions, not the label.

More writing room (6 to 8)

Bigger pages for long entries, planning spreads and sketching. They need a bigger bag, and they don't pretend otherwise.

6. Personalized B5 Leather Refillable Journal

BygoneMark · Best for long entries

The roomy traveler's notebook. Three B5 inserts (lined, grid, blank) sit on an elastic system, with a removable card-pocket organizer and a built-in pen holder. It suits study trips, work travel and anyone who writes a page or two every night.

At 261 × 185 mm it's a laptop-bag journal, not a jacket-pocket one. Engraving is available on the cover.

8. Personalized Leather Loose-Leaf Journal

BygoneMark · Best for kraft paper and sketching

A different take on refillable: ten inserts of 120gsm kraft paper, 400 pages in total, under a wrap-around leather strap. It comes in a Square or a Wide format, and the Wide one suits landscape sketches and travel collage.

The kraft paper is warm and toothy. If you want bright white lined pages for neat notes, one of the other systems will suit you better.

Detail What the product page states
Material Top-grain crazy horse cowhide
Square size 6.3 × 6.5 × 0.79 in (160 × 165 × 20 mm)
Wide size 6.3 × 8.5 × 0.79 in (160 × 215 × 20 mm)

Which paper and inserts should you choose?

Fit first, then preference. Blank for sketches and free-form notes. Lined for long entries. Grid for plans, budgets and diagrams. Dot grid if you want a bit of both. Kraft paper changes the contrast and how ink looks. Our guide to the best paper for leather journals covers weight and ink bleed in more detail.

About fountain pens: paper weight alone doesn't prove how a page handles fountain pen ink. Surface, ink and nib matter too, so test a back page before you commit a whole trip to it.

How to choose in 7 steps

Step Do this
1 Decide what gets replaced: single sheets, one bound notebook or separate inserts
2 Measure the bag or pocket the closed journal will travel in
3 Pick a page size you'll actually write on, not just the smallest
4 Check exact refill dimensions, hole spacing and insert thickness
5 Choose a closure based on how much loose paper you carry
6 Check where you'll buy refills and what they cost over a year
7 Choose leather, color and engraving last

How to pack and care for a refillable journal

  • Pack it where heavier things won't crush it, not under a laptop or shoes.
  • Don't cram extra booklets under an elastic just because they fit; it stretches.
  • Tickets and receipts go in a card holder or organizer, not loose between pages.
  • Write with clean, dry hands, and keep drinks and sunscreen away from the paper.

For the cover, a soft dry cloth is enough most of the time. The Library of Congress recommends freshly washed and dried hands for handling books, and advises against oiling or dressing leather bindings. Our leather accessories care guide covers journal covers step by step. Material labels follow the FTC Leather Guides, which is why we repeat each maker's exact wording above.

The final word

There isn't one best refillable journal for everyone, but there is a best system for how you write. For most travelers that's the Journey Wrap A5. Pocket carry points to the Legacy Plaque Passport-Size, a single running diary to the A6 folio, moving pages to the rings, and long entries to the B5. Decide what gets replaced, measure your bag, then pick the leather.

FAQ

What is the best refillable journal for travel?

For most travelers, a multi-insert traveler's notebook like the Journey Wrap A5 ($69.00), with three removable notebooks and a card holder. For pocket carry, a passport-size cover; for reordering pages, a ring binder.

Are refillable journals worth it?

Yes, if you fill notebooks regularly and want to keep one cover for years. If you rarely finish a notebook, a plain bound journal may be all you need.

What's the difference between a traveler's notebook and a ring binder?

A traveler's notebook holds whole booklets under elastic or cord, and you replace a booklet at a time. A ring binder holds single punched sheets that you can add, remove and move one by one.

Will any A5 refill fit an A5 journal?

No. Insert widths, spine thickness and ring hole spacing vary by maker, so measure the insert or sheet you already have before buying refills.

What size travel journal is best for a carry-on?

Passport size if it has to fit a pocket; Regular or A5 if it goes in a bag and you write long entries. Measure the bag pocket before choosing.

How do you use a refillable journal on a trip?

Give each insert a job, such as itinerary, daily notes and sketches, and keep tickets in the card holder. When an insert fills up, date it, take it out and add a fresh one.

Can you use fountain pens in a leather travel journal?

It depends on the paper, not the leather. Test your pen and ink on a back page first, because weight alone doesn't predict bleed-through.

How do I care for a leather journal cover?

Wipe it with a soft dry cloth, keep it away from soaking and direct heat, and keep any cleaner or conditioner well away from the paper. Test any product on a hidden spot first.
